CLEVELAND HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL | CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

STUDIO: BSHM

SIZE: 356,000 SF (173,000 SF New / 183,000 SF Reno)

The BSHM Design Team was selected due to the firm’s

ability to honor the original 1925 building and transform it

into a student centered educational facility. The original

High School was constructed in 1925 and had received a

multitude of additions over the past 89 years.  Due to the non-conforming nature of those additions, current changes in

technology, and the District’s desire to implement an improved educational delivery system, the project included partial

building demolition, major interior renovations to the building’s historic 1925 core and major additions.  Due to the era of

various additions, significant abatement and demolition of over 240,000 SF was performed.

183,000 SF of the 1925 High School was completely renovated to replace all interior finishes, doors, windows, HVAC,

plumbing, electrical and technology systems to return the facility to its original grandeur while accommodating

contemporary instructional models.  The building also received 173,000 SF of additions to house the District’s career tech

programs, additional classrooms, physical education spaces, a new pool and fine and performing arts facilities. The project

utilized Student Centered Learning Environments in numerous academic departments.

The High School is located on two city blocks in the Cleveland Heights Community and accordingly, presented a challenge

for all aspects of design as well as construction.  The building was being planned to be “net-zero-ready” and utilizes an

HVAC system using hybrid geothermal and gas fired equipment.

The project is LEED Gold Certified.
